Help for Congo Women

Run for Congo Women raises funds to benefit Women for Women International’s programs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Women for Women International supports women in war and post-war regions—like our sisters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo—with financial assistance, job skills training, rights awareness education, trauma counseling, and small business assistance so they can rebuild their lives. Visit our Web site at womenforwomen.org

Congolese lives matter. The lives of Congolese women are significant. The lives of Congolese children are precious. They have waited far too long. They are worth our effort. We are running to help. For more information about the Democratic Republic of the Congo, visit runforcongowomen.org

Our run will start at the Skagit Playfields Jogging Trail near the SVC tennis courts. Suggested donation is $10 per person, all ages.

For more information contact Anne Donovan Clark at (360) 416-7821, or go to our Facebook page at Skagit Run For Congo Women.

Human Rights Presentations

On May 10, 2012, educators, parents, students and the community are invited to attend two free presentations at Skagit Valley College. The first will be entitled The Science and Experience of Gender by faculty members Lynne Fouquette and Linda Jordan. If you think that gender involves two boxes on a form, think again. You will learn that gender is far more complicated than you ever imagined. Gain information that will help you understand why so many people struggle with what seems like a very simple concept. You will be forever changed by what you learn.

The second presentation is by attorney Alexander Wu, regarding a court case in the Aberdeen School District. This case settled on January 26, 2012.

Russell Dickerson III, a former student who endured severe and persistent harassment through junior high and high school, was awarded $100,000 from the district and the ACLU received $35,000 in legal fees.

Now 20, Russell is an African-American resident of Aberdeen. For six years, from 2003 to 2009, he was harassed by other students based on his race, sex, and perceived sexual orientation. “I learned from my parents that you should never give up. You should fight for your rights — you don’t just walk away.” said Dickerson.

“This settlement sends a message to school districts statewide to take strong action as soon as they learn a student is being bullied,” said Sarah Dunne, ACLU-WA legal director.

There will be a discussion about ways students, parents, school personnel and the community can support training and programs to prevent the need for legal action.

“Washington State has strong, legal protections in place to help students and their families, and we have great commitment in Skagit County to create welcoming schools where all students may learn,” said Kathy Reim, president of PFLAG Skagit and a former teacher.

“We hope many people will come away with dedication to continue the good work being done here,” Reim said.

These presentations will be from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Come spend the afternoon in the Multipurpose Room in the Knutzen Cardinal Center at Skagit Valley College. The workshops are sponsored by the SVC Rainbow Alliance and PFLAG Skagit County.
